What the heck, life is too short! If people know their risks but still want to tan, let them rost, that makes them happier in life. And if you are happy you live longer. So, it isn't all disadvanteges.
References :
A bit of tan, little by little, is good. It maintains skin's ability to protect itself. However, this applies more to those of us who have some pigment (melanin) in the skin and thus the ability to produce more. For people who have very fair skin or are prone to develop malignant moles (something a doctor can evaluate), it's better to stay away from the sun, use the most protective sunblock etc. Otherwise, if tanning occurs without sunburns, it is perfectly safe. Melanin is the same pigment people with naturally dark skin have, so it has nothing to do with skin cancer. The sunburns, especially repeated severe ones, are those which may cause long term damage.
About artificial tanning, this seems an absurd idea to me. I like to tan in the sun, while swimming if possible.
And I think both fair and dark skin (tanned or natural) can be beautiful.
References :
Tan is the melonin in your skin screaming out in its final, desperate defense before the skin cells die. Overexposure to the sun leads to a tan, which is the body trying to protect itself from the UV radiation. Tans are NOT HEALTHY, and are actually a "pre-cancerous" condition. While having a tan doesn't mean you'll get cancer, it does increase your liklihood dramatically. Tanning also causes your skin to wrinkle and spot much more and much earlier.

TANNING IS NOT GOOD FOR YOU. WEAR SUNSCREEN AND PROTECT YOUR SKIN, PEOPLE.
References :
I think it's stupid to slather oil on yourself and lie in the sun to cook youself.

People who have unnaturally dark tans that look painted on look like cooked turkeys. It's disgusting looking. Tanning salons are stupid, and people who think naturally pale skin is bad are stupid.

I love my skin, I'm not going to cook it.
References :
Very fair skinned and just been to a family wedding in cyprus, so much sunburn I winced just looking at it! Everyone thought I was the oddball in hat, long trousers, loose top and SF60!
References :
It is the same reason people smoke and over eat. We tend to do what makes us feel good on the sort haul and ignore the consequences of are actions. It is much easier to blame the people we gave our money to for our own poor judgment later.
References :
well of course there is an excess of a lot of things, especially tanning...with the sprays, gels, lotions, beds......multi-billion dollar business, especially when someone is photographed frequently.....the camera and bright lights drown your skin out.....
but the only good benefit to tanning in a booth is used by dermatologist and hospital nurseries. Dermatologist will use small amounts of UV rays to blend someone's skin pigment who may be recovering from a skin disorder. A hospital will use it,,but they call it a 'billy' bed. Its a very tiny version of a tanning bed that infants are placed in to help with jaundice yellowing.
